Crafting Delicious Delights with a Conscience

Our Commitment to Sustainability and Community

Baking for Today:
Caring for Tomorrow.

At Homestyle Bake, we’re not just passionate about crafting delicious baked goods—we’re dedicated to nurturing our environment and supporting our community for a brighter future.
OUR COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY

Our commitment to sustainability is deeply ingrained in our business culture, guiding every decision we make. From minimising our carbon footprint through the principles of REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE to supporting our employees’ growth and investing in community initiatives, we strive to leave a positive footprint in everything we do.

As proud members of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), we’re actively engaged in reducing the environmental impact of our packaging and continuously improving our sustainability practices. Our recent achievement of an Overall score of 90% – Beyond Best Practice for the 2022 APCO Annual Reporting period is a testament to our dedication. But for us, it’s not just about meeting targets—it’s about creating a better future for generations to come.

Keeping up with industry developments:

At Homestyle Bake, our commitment to sustainability extends to every aspect of our operations, including our packaging choices. While our packaging, including bread bags and closures, is considered recyclable, its recyclability ultimately depends on the availability of suitable recycling streams in your area. We’re actively working towards using more eco-friendly alternatives, such as cardboard manufactured Kwik Loks, across our full product range. Currently, we’re testing these closures on selected products and closely monitoring their performance in the marketplace and with consumers. Although initial results show promising usage rates, we’re continuously learning and improving to ensure the integrity of the closures meets our standards and withstands consumer handling. Moreover, we’re excited about the potential of sustainable closures as an alternative to cardboard, which we anticipate will become available soon. These closures are expected to offer enhanced strength and durability, providing an improved user experience while aligning with our sustainability goals.

Keeping up and actioning industry developments:

We’re also keeping a keen eye on industry developments, such as the new trial led by Australia’s Soft Plastics Taskforce. As part of this initiative, major supermarkets like Woolworths, Coles, and Aldi are collaborating to address the lack of soft plastics recycling infrastructure in Australia. This trial aims to find innovative solutions for recycling soft plastics, including those used in packaging. By identifying potential end markets for used soft plastics, such as asphalt roads, concrete aggregate, or even materials for shopping trolleys and baskets, we’re hopeful that this initiative will pave the way for more sustainable packaging practices across the industry. At Homestyle Bake, we’re committed to staying informed and actively participating in initiatives that contribute to a more sustainable future for all.

The following strategies have contributed to our reduction:

  • Bread bags wasted during the production process are returned for recycling.
  • Bread bags and products returned from retail outlets are recycled, with Homestyle bearing the cost.
  • All cardboard, paper bags and paper used within the business is recycled.
  • We aim where practical to purchase packaging that can be recycled, re-purposed, composable or
    returned to our supplier.
  • Excess food is distributed to those who need it most.
